The Wonders of Bamboo Charcoal and How it Can Benefit Your Skin

Posted by Anita Sun

When you're searching for a skincare product that's natural and will provide you with beautiful and healthy skin, you should look into the wonders of bamboo charcoal and the many benefits that it can provide. This kind of charcoal is made from the Moso bamboo plant, which allows for the creation of bamboo charcoal. While bamboo charcoal is injected with steam in a manner that activates the charcoal, there are no additional chemicals used for the creation of this substance, which ensures that it's natural.

The Moso bamboo plant mainly grows in China and is named the Phyllostachys edulis plant. The plant itself is harvested once it has been growing for five years. The plant is then cut up into small pieces before being placed in a fire that reaches as high as 1,800 degrees Fahrenheit. At this point, the bamboo charcoal is formed and can start being processed for use in skincare products.

In order for the bamboo charcoal to be used as an ingredient in skincare products, it must first be activated, which occurs when steam is injected into it. When steam is sent into the charcoal, the surface area of the substance expands, which is what makes bamboo charcoal highly beneficial when applied to a person's skin. Because of the larger surface area, the powder can adsorb any toxins, bacteria, or harmful particles on your skin. Keep in mind that activated charcoal is better than standard bamboo charcoal in this regard. Activated charcoal will have a tighter grip on the substances that are effectively adsorbed.

Even though bamboo charcoal has only recently been placed within skincare products, the history of charcoal being used for medicinal reasons is a lengthy one. Medicinal charcoal was first used by the Egyptians in 1,500 BC in order to adsorb the odors caused by wounds. In the modern world, charcoal of all types can help to purify water and air when used in the right appliances. This substance is also commonly used for treating cases of drug poisoning and overdose. When mixed into water, you can consume the substance for the treatment of diarrhea, poisoning, or indigestion. You can also use charcoal in compresses or poultices when treating pain or infections on the skin. This article goes into detail about bamboo charcoal and the kinds of benefits that it can provide when applied to your skin.

How Does Bamboo Charcoal Work in Skincare?

When activated charcoal is placed within skincare products, it can draw out the dirt and debris that's located in the pores of your skin, which helps to make the skin appear to be healthier and less grimy. After you've spent a long day working or running errands, bamboo charcoal can help to rejuvenate your skin and restore its appearance. The reason why bamboo charcoal is used as an ingredient in skincare products is because it can:
  • Exfoliate drying skin to remove dead skin cells
  • Be applied to every skin type, which makes it highly versatile when used in skincare
  • Help with the reduction of acne
  • Cleans the skin by removing impurities and pollutants that are found deep in the pores of your skin
  • Adsorbs a wide range of impurities even when only a small amount of the substance is placed in the skincare product
  • Has anti-fungal, anti-microbial, anti-bacterial, and anti-viral properties

Acts As a Cleanser

Since bamboo charcoal is able to adsorb toxins, impurities, and free radicals, this substance can act as a potent skin cleanser, which means that your skin will become healthier after bamboo charcoal is applied. As a cleanser, bamboo charcoal can also kill all viruses on contact.

Very Absorbent

As touched upon previously, bamboo charcoal being injected with steam helps to provide the substance with a larger surface area, which makes it very adsorbent. These characteristics allow the substance to clean your pores of toxins, free radicals, dirt, and debris.

Can Help You Detoxify

Detoxification involves ridding your body and skin of toxic substances. The removal of these toxins should improve your overall health.

Can Adsorb Odors

As mentioned previously, bamboo charcoal was used by the Egyptians in 1,500 BC to get rid of the foul odors that occurred with wounds. The same principles apply today, which means that placing this substance on your skin can help you get rid of any unwanted odors.

Clears Up Skin Conditions

If you suffer from various skin conditions like acne, cold sores, or hives, spreading some bamboo charcoal on the affected areas of your skin can clear up these conditions. It's important to treat these conditions quickly if you want to prevent the development of scarring and blemishes.

Can Be Added to a Bath

Bamboo charcoal is a great substance to add to a bath. When placed into the water, the charcoal will release minerals like magnesium, potassium, and calcium. These minerals can cultivate warming circulation within your body, which aids in making the bath more comfortable.

Can Fight Bacteria

Yet another benefit of applying bamboo charcoal to your skin is that it can fight bacteria. It also has effective anti-fungal properties that can be used for the treatment of ringworm or athlete's foot.

Adsorbs Humidity and Perspiration

When bamboo charcoal is placed under your bedding or pillow, it will adsorb perspiration as you sleep. If you use a dehumidifier when sleeping, bamboo charcoal can act as a substitute for a dehumidifier. The substance brings in humidity from throughout the room.

Adsorbs Toxins When Consumed

If you mix bamboo charcoal with water and consume it, the substance will absorb toxins that are found within your digestive system. If you want to properly cleanse your digestive tract, this is a great way to do so. Having a healthier body will improve the appearance of your skin.

Exfoliates the Skin

Bamboo charcoal is notable for being able to exfoliate the skin, which can help to get rid of any dead skin cells that have yet to be washed away. Getting rid of skin cells that are already dead can make your skin appear to be rejuvenated and more youthful.

Other Unique Benefits of Bamboo Charcoal

Along with the many skincare benefits that are provided with bamboo charcoal, this substance provides numerous distinct benefits that may surprise you. For instance, bamboo charcoal is able to emit negative ions. These ions are notable in that they can eliminate the electronic smog that surrounds the electronic devices in your home. These devices can include anything from a smartphone to your computer.

Bamboo charcoal is considered to be a natural treatment in medicine because of its detoxifying properties and other beneficial components. As mentioned previously, consuming bamboo charcoal can help you prevent the occurrence of a drug overdose. When the charcoal passes through your stomach, it will absorb the harmful chemicals contained within, which can be very helpful if you believe that you're on the verge of experiencing a drug overdose.

This substance can also prevent your body from directly absorbing the cholesterol that's found within your gut, which can reduce your cholesterol levels by as much as 25 percent. Some additional benefits of using bamboo charcoal include kidney function benefits and the improvement of gastrointestinal issues. If you currently suffer from chronic kidney disease, bamboo charcoal may be able to reduce the severity of your symptoms by getting rid of some of the toxins in your body. As for gastrointestinal issues, bamboo charcoal can effectively assist with the relief of bloating and gas. Even when you're not using bamboo charcoal on your skin, it can benefit your health in many different ways, which is why this substance is highly regarded.

How to Apply your Bamboo Charcoal Mask

If you want to apply a bamboo charcoal mask to your face, there are some simple and easy steps for you to follow. The steps for applying a bamboo charcoal mask include:

  • Make sure to cleanse your skin before you apply the mask. When your face is clean, the mask can better penetrate the pores on your skin
  • Make sure that the mask is evenly applied over your face, which includes your chin, forehead, nose, and cheeks. The mask should be softly massaged into your skin with a soft-bristled brush or your fingertips. Don't get the substance into your eyes.
  • Allow the mask to dry in place for 15 minutes. Once this time has passed, you can wash the mask away with some warm water.
  • Dry your face gently before you apply some kind of facial moisturizer.
When applied properly, this mask can remove impurities from your skin, improve any acne on your face, and treat possible insect bites.

Bamboo charcoal is a wonderful substance that can provide your skin with many notable benefits. Because the substance is 100 percent natural, you don't need to worry that any harmful additives or chemicals have been added to the charcoal. After you apply a bamboo charcoal mask to your skin, you should notice immediate results that make your skin appear to be healthy, beautiful, and more natural.

Activated charcoal is an amazing ingredient. My skin looks better & the persistent rash I’ve had on my arms, for years, has cleared up & is just about gone, except for a few tiny spots on each arm. I’ve been to several dermatologists over the years & received no precise diagnosis & many medications to heal this rash to no avail. Finally decided to live with it. Then I ran out of my body wash & used what one of my kids had left in shower. I was skeptical of the activated charcoal in it, but noticed an improvement in my skin right away. So next I tried their shampoo & conditioner & was surprised how soft & shiny my naturally coarse hair felt. Needless to say I am in love with the products with activated charcoal in them..
