8 Powerful Holistic Acne Treatments You can do at Home
Posted by Anita Sun

If you have yet to experience acne, there's a good chance that it will affect you eventually. The main reason that acne occurs is because the skin pores become clogged with dead skin cells and oil. When the pores become plugged up, certain bacteria may grow in the area that is referred to as Propionibacterium acnes. The white blood cells within your body will invariably attack these bacteria, which results in the development of minor skin inflammation as well as acne. The numerous factors that can contribute to an individual getting acne include:
- Recent infections
- Hormone changes
- Genetics
- High amounts of stress
- A poor diet
Standard acne treatments don't always work as intended when applied to a person's skin. Whether due to a chemical in the skin or some other problem, you could experience unintended side effects that only serve to compound the skin issues that you're currently going through. This article goes into detail about some of the top holistic acne treatments that you should be able to perform at home.
1. Apple Cider Vinegar

Apple cider vinegar is a highly effective substance that's great for killing bacteria. The potency of apple cider vinegar and other types of vinegar allows for these substances to get rid of bacteria on the skin with ease. This vinegar is made from the juice that's taken from pressed apples. It consists of a variety of organic acids that are known for their ability to kill the bacteria that causes acne.
One of these acids is citric acid, which is commonly found in citrus fruits like limes and lemons. It's also important to note that apple cider vinegar consists of succinic acid, which keeps the inflammation that results from acne at bay. By effectively suppressing inflammation, it's possible for apple cider vinegar to help prevent acne scars. Lactic acid may also be able to assist in enhancing the appearance of acne scars that have already formed.
Before you use apple cider vinegar, it's highly recommended that you dilute the substance with water, which will keep the vinegar from damaging and irritating your skin. Consider mixing one portion of vinegar with three portions of water. Once you have created this solution, you should apply it to your skin with a cotton ball. Let this solution sit in place for anywhere from 5-20 seconds, after which you can rinse and dry the area. Repeat this same process around 1-2 times every day.
2. Ice
Before using ice, keep in mind that it isn't able to completely heal the acne that you're suffering from. However, it can reduce your inflammation when applied to the skin. When acne breakouts have just formed, they will be swollen, red, and inflamed. By lessening the amount of inflammation that occurs with an acne breakout, the acne should dissipate at a quicker rate. Place the ice within a cloth or thin towel before pressing it against the affected skin. Keep the ice on the area for around 5-10 minutes before repeating the process an additional two times.
3. Green Tea
Green tea is another holistic acne treatment that provides the skin with fantastic results once applied. Because green tea is very high in antioxidants, drinking this tea can boost your overall health. As for acne, green tea consists of polyphenols that are able to reduce inflammation and fight bacteria. While there haven't been many studies held on the effects of green tea on acne, the few studies that have taken place have resulted in acne improving in nearly everyone who used the substance on their skin for a period of four weeks.
Keep in mind that drinking this substance can lower insulin levels and blood sugar levels. The primary antioxidant that's found in green tea is epigallocatechin-3-gallate, which fights against inflammation and is able to prevent future growth of acne among individuals who are susceptible to this condition. When you want to use green tea on your skin, steep the tea in water that's boiling for around 3-4 minutes. Once the tea has cooled, you can apply it to your skin with a cotton ball. When it has dried, you can rinse the substance off with water.
4. Honey
Honey is an ingredient that's used as a holistic treatment for a wide range of ailments. The antiseptic properties that are contained within honey are able to eliminate the bacteria that causes acne, which is why honey is also effective when applied directly to an acne breakout. For the purpose of healing acne, it's highly recommended that you use medical-grade honey, the primary of which is Manuka honey. When using a potent form of honey such as this, you should be able to get rid of bacteria in a short period of time.
You might want to consider making a honey and cinnamon mask as well for the acne breakouts on your face. These masks can also fight against inflammation and bacteria. If you decide to create this mask, mix a teaspoon of cinnamon with around two tablespoons of honey for the paste. Once your face has been cleansed, the mask can be applied to your face and should be left on for upwards of 10-20 minutes, after which it can be rinsed off.
5. Tea Tree Oil

Tea tree oil is extracted directly from Melaleuca alternifolia leaves, which are part of a tree that's found only in Australia. This essential oil can help with the reduction of inflammation and the elimination of bacteria, which should assist in clearing up your acne. Before using tea tree oil for the treatment of your acne, it's important to understand that this oil is highly potent, which is why it should be diluted before it's applied to your skin.
Make sure that you mix a single portion of oil with around nine portions of water. A cotton swab should then be placed in the mixture before it's positioned on the affected areas. You could then use some moisturizer on your skin. This process should be repeated around 1-2 times every day.
6. Aloe Vera
Aloe vera is a kind of tropical plant that's able to produce certain types of leaves that can create a clear gel. This particular gel is commonly added to lotions, ointments, and creams. Because of how effective aloe vera is, it can be used as a treatment for burns, abrasions, and rashes. The sulfur and salicylic acid that are present in aloe vera can reduce and improve acne.
If you grow aloe vera plants at home, organic aloe vera is the strongest and most effective type. The gel is simple to scrape from the aloe plant. which can be done with a spoon. You can then apply this gel to your skin as a kind of moisturizer, after which you can repeat this process 1-2 times every day.
7. Supplements

There are many daily supplements that can be highly beneficial for your skin when you are suffering from acne and want to prevent future outbreaks. These supplements include turmeric, zinc, and fish oil.
8. Follow a Low Glycemic Load Diet
A low glycemic-load diet is one that centers around keeping blood sugar low. The glycemic index that a food item has indicates how much the food causes a person's blood sugar to rise. Foods that are high in GI lead to a spike in your insulin, which boosts sebum production and makes it more likely that an acne breakout occurs.
The foods that consist of a relatively high glycemic index extend to pastries, soft drinks, white bread, cakes, and doughnuts. These foods should be avoided as much as possible if you want to reduce the amount of acne that you experience. In order to maintain this kind of diet, you'll want to eat foods that have a low glycemic index to them, which include nuts, fruits, vegetables, whole grains, and legumes. Studies show that individuals who maintain this type of diet will have lower levels of the IGF-1 hormone, which is a hormone that's known to bring about acne.
The holistic acne treatments in this list are powerful and effective yet can also be used at home, which allows you to avoid using traditional acne treatments that may be expensive or contain harmful chemicals that irritate your skin. When you use one or more of these holistic treatments, you should soon begin to notice an improve in the amount and appearance of your acne.

Very informative, The remedy that I know for reducing acne is the neem leaves. I Take about 30-35 leaves of neem and finely paste it in the mixi. Then I apply it on the acne spots over night. It does magical effect. Ps: only fresh neems should be used. And neem has anti bacterial property just like turmeric and fights against acne.
